Bishop had arranged to meet Baker at a local coffee shop under the guise of follow-up questions to finalize the files on Chip Stuart. I wanted to go, but Jimmy axed that idea for fear Iâd end up on the news for assault. He had a point. He also wanted everything to appear casual and keep Baker from being suspicious.
Bishop returned to the office alone.
âWhereâs Baker?â I asked.
âHe didnât show.â
The hairs on my arms stood. I jumped from the chair in the investigation room. âHe knows, Bishop. He knows we think heâs involved. Heâs running. We need a BOLO on him.â
âAlready done.â
Jimmy stormed in. His face was red, and his hands were clenched into fists so tight his knuckles were white. âYou lost him?â It wasnât exactly a question.
âChief,â Bishop said. âHe didnât show.â
Jimmy ran his hand over his cropped hair. âCall Birmingham. See if theyâve had any interaction with him since the investigation closed.â
I retrieved the phone number and called Detective Anderson. He picked up on the second ring. âAnderson.â
âThis is Detective Ryder with Hamby PD. Mind if I put you on speaker?â
âNo problem, maâam.â
I hit the speaker button. âI have Detective Bishop and Chief Abernathy in the room with me.â
âGentlemen,â he said. âWhat can I help you with?â
Bishop spoke first. âDid you receive the email I sent you earlier this morning?â
âYes, I did. Iâve already got calls out to the victims, but Iâm not sure why this is important.â
âWe can explain that in a moment,â I said. âRight now, we have a question regarding Scott Baker. He was the father of Claire Baker who was attacked by Daniel Travis.â
âI donât remember the name but go ahead.â
âHas your department had any interaction with him since the investigation closed?â
âGive me a moment.â He put us on hold.
âHeâs an odd one,â Bishop whispered.
âIf by odd you mean condescending, I agree.â
Bishop rolled his eyes. He always assumed I believed all male law enforcement was condescending. I probably did, but that wasnât my point then.
Anderson returned to the line. âDetective, Mr. Baker is no longer a resident of Alabama. In fact, if you were to check for yourself instead of calling me, youâd see heâs a current resident of Alpharetta, Georgia. I believe thatâs close to your town, correct?â
Bishop and I made eye contact. He raised a brow and mouthed, âHe moved?â
âWe are aware of his move,â I lied. âIâm asking if heâs had any run-ins with your department.â
âUnless he was arrested, we wouldnât have noted anything in our system, so, to the best of my knowledge, no, there has been no interaction with Mr. Baker.â
âThank you,â I said.
âMay I ask why youâre asking?â
I regarded Jimmy. He shook his head. âWe like to keep an eye on people who support serial killers, and he paid for Chip Stuartâs attorney.â
âI understand. And regarding the assault victims?â
I looked over at Bishop again. I wasnât exactly sure what he said in the email.
âOne of the victims here was threatened, and weâve learned the women on that list may be at risk, too.
